  • Selecting a clinician to work with is the first of many steps in the therapeutic journey - congrats! We suggest you send the clinician a quick email to set up a consultation. Include details like your name, age, prefered pronouns, symptoms you’re experiencing and whether or not you have insurance. Remember, you don’t have to share anything you’re not comfortable with. From here, the clinician will schedule your consultation.

Still not sure what to write? You can use this!

    “Hi [CLINICIAN],

My name is [NAME], I’m [AGE], and use [PRONOUNS]. I’m interested in starting therapy after experiencing [SYMPTOMS]. I have [PLAN] insurance. Please let me know if you are currently accepting new clients. If so, I look forward to scheduling a consultation.

  • We offer sessions both in person at our office at 132 Allens Creek Road, Suite 205, as well as virtual options.

For more specific availability, please contact the office or your preferred therapist.

  • A phone consultation serves as an initial opportunity for you to connect with a clinician and discuss your needs. During your phone call, you’ll start by introducing yourselves. The clinician will share a bit about their background, experience and approach to therapy. You’ll share what bring you to therapy, as well as any concerns, challenges or issues you’d like to address. Lastly, you’ll cover details like scheduling, session frequency, and whether you prefer in-person or virtual sessions. If you have specific preferences or constraints, this is the time to discuss them.

During this phone call, you're encouraged to ask any questions you may have about the therapeutic process, logistics, or any other concerns. This is a collaborative process, and your comfort and understanding are priorities.

Remember, the phone consultation is a no-pressure conversation designed to help you both determine if you’re a good fit for working together.

  • Your first therapy session, also known as the intake session, is designed to create a comfortable and collaborative space for you to begin our therapeutic journey. You’ll start with a warm welcome and brief introductions. Your clinician will review the limits of confidentiality and provide you with an informed consent form. This will outline the parameters of your therapeutic relationship, ensuring you understand your rights and responsibilities in the counseling process.

You’ll be invited to share the reasons that brought you to therapy. This is an opportunity for you to express your concerns, challenges, and goals. Feel free to share as much or as little as you're comfortable with.

You'll discuss your personal history, including relevant background information, family dynamics, and significant life events. This helps your clinician gain a comprehensive understanding of your experiences and context.

You’ll collaboratively establish your therapeutic goals. This involves discussing what you hope to achieve through therapy and setting realistic, measurable objectives for your work together.

Throughout the session, you’re encouraged to provide feedback, ask questions, and share any concerns. Open communication is vital in creating a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship.

  • Yes! What you share with your therapist is confidential unless your therapist is concerned about your safety or the safety of others.

  • While online platforms like BetterHelp and Talkspace can offer helpful services, the way clinicians are paid on those platforms challenges clinician boundaries and can threaten the quality of services you receive. When you work with a clinician at Cognition Co., your session fee goes directly to them so you are only paying for the services you are receiving!

  • If you have any additional questions, send us a message at hello@cognitionco.org. You can expect a response in 24-48 business hours.
