Starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you’re not sure what to expect.
We created this guide to answer some of the most common questions about therapy, scheduling, costs, and getting started, so you can feel a little more prepared before your first appointment.
-
We offer individual, couples, and family therapy sessions.
While each clinician has their own prices, session fees typically range from $100–$125 for individual therapy and $120–$150 for couples and family therapy.
Some clinicians also accept insurance. Payment is due at the time of service, and we accept all major credit cards, HSA/FSA cards, cash, and checks.
For the most accurate information regarding fees, insurance, and availability, please visit our clinician page or contact us directly.
Should you have any questions regarding payment or insurance, please contact us via our contact form.

Finding the right therapist is an important part of the process.
As you explore our clinicians, you may want to consider areas of specialty, therapeutic approach, session style, availability, and insurance and fees.
If you’re unsure where to start, reach out to us. We’re happy to help connect you with a clinician who may be a good fit.
-
We’re so glad you found a clinician you resonate with! The next step is to send them an email, but don’t worry, you don’t need to have the “perfect” introduction prepared.
A simple message sharing that you’re interested in starting therapy is more than enough. You can include your name and preferred pronouns, your availability, what brings you to therapy, and insurance information (if applicable).
You never have to share more than you’re comfortable with.
Sample Inquiry:
“Hi [Clinician Name],
My name is [Your Name], and I’m interested in starting therapy. I’ve been experiencing [brief concern], and I’d love to learn more about your availability and approach.
Thank you!”
-
Yes. We offer both in-person therapy at our Penfield, NY office and virtual therapy sessions. Availability may vary by clinician.
-
Consultations are designed to help you and your clinician determine whether it feels like a good fit.
During the conversation, you may discuss what’s bringing you to therapy, your goals or concerns, scheduling and availability, preferences for virtual or in-person sessions, and any questions you might have about the therapy process.
There’s no pressure to have everything figured out before reaching out.
-
Your first session is focused on getting to know you.
Your clinician will review important information like confidentiality, policies, and informed consent before talking through your experiences, concerns, and goals for therapy.
You’re encouraged to ask questions, provide feedback, and move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Therapy is a collaborative process, not something you have to navigate perfectly.
-
Yes. Therapy is confidential, with a few legal and ethical exceptions related to safety concerns.
Your clinician will review confidentiality policies with you during your first session so you understand your rights and what to expect.
-
Evidence-based therapy means your treatment is informed by research, clinical expertise, and approaches that have been shown to effectively support mental health concerns.
At Cognition Co., our clinicians use proven therapeutic methods while also tailoring care to your unique experiences, goals, personality, and needs.
In other words: therapy should feel both informed and personal, not overly clinical or one-size-fits-all.
Different clinicians may use different evidence-based approaches depending on what works best for you, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), trauma-informed care, and other collaborative treatment approaches.
-
At Cognition Co., therapy is personal.
Our clinicians are supported in ways that allow them to provide thoughtful, sustainable care, not rushed or volume-based services.
We believe strong therapeutic relationships matter, and we prioritize quality care, transparency, and connection throughout the process.
